Papers of the William Dobell Art Foundation.

Papers relating to the activities of the William Dobell Art Foundation set up after his death in 1970. On January 19th, 1971 The Sir William Dobell Art Foundation was formed and was made the sole beneficiary of the artist's estate. The papers comprise schedules of donations by the Foundation, financial records, trust deeds, minute books; business and personal correspondence including correspondence relating to the annual Memorial addresses held by the Foundation and the Dobell Prize for drawing; ; press clippings, exhibition reviews, invitations and photographs. Correspondents include A P Clune, Richard Heathcote, Harold Mertz, Cyril Pearl and various Australian state and commercial galleries.

William Dobell was a painter and graphic artist. Born in Newcastle in 1899, Dobell was educated at Cooks Hill Commercial Public School and became a draughtman in 1916 for a local architect. In 1924 he enrolled at Julian Ashton's Art School in Sydney and went on to study overseas after he won Society of Artists' travelling scholarship in April 1929.
